What is news?

In my opinion, news is the reporting of information through some sort of medium that informs the public. In order for the information being provided to be considered news, however, I believe that the intentions of the news source must be for the greater good. Whether it is to create a better informed population to promote the effectiveness of Democracy, or to bring attention to an issue half-way across the world that we would otherwise ignore, news must contribute to the betterment of society. Although, there may be different kinds of Journalsim, news, at its core should not be bias or contain an agenda.
