Despite Loss, Wildcat Fever Sweeps Campus
The UNH Wildcats Men’s Hockey team suffered a tough 4-1 loss to Merrimack on Saturday night after a convincing win over Northeastern the night before. If the ‘Cats had won, it would have put them in a shared top spot atop the Hockey East with divisional rival Boston College.
Despite outshooting the Warriors 52-24, the Wildcats lost their second game of the season to Merrimack, and lost the season series between the two teams. “It was very disappointing, and honestly unexpected” said Haley Coy, a UNH sophomore. Although the UNH Men’s team lost on Saturday, their incredible season has not gone unnoticed. They are currently 16-7-2 and hold the number three spot in national polls.
There is quite the buzz surrounding the team this year, and UNH students say that the success goes beyond what happens within the confines of the Whittemore Center Arena. Kristin Mikulski, a Junior the University of New Hampshire, says that “when the hockey team does well, there is much more pride in the school. More people attend the games, and in all, more people care about what is going on.” The hockey team’s promising season has brought a wave of energy across campus as it has become a large topic of conversation.
When asked about the Wildcats success, Michele Vizzo, also a Junior at UNH, said that “the team gives pride to the students, and if they have something to be proud of, there is a much happier campus.” The students at UNH may not have been too proud last season as the Wildcats put together a disappointing record of 15-19-3. This historically enthusiastic “Hockey School” needed something to be excited about, and the Men’s Hockey Team answered the call.
